Wisdom of Solomon #1

Proverbs 1:15-19 My son, do not walk in the way with them (sinners); restrain your foot from their path; For their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood. For in vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird! But [when these men set a trap for others] they are lying in wait for their own blood; they set an ambush for their own lives. So are the ways of everyone who is greedy of gain; such [greed for plunder] takes away the lives of its possessors.

Proverbs 15:27 He who is greedy for gain troubles his own house, But he who hates bribes will live.

1Timothy 6:10 For the love of money (greed) is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.

Mark 4:19 …but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.

  1. According to Solomon, the love for money has a few detrimental consequences: (a) it robs you of your life and (b) it brings trouble to your own house (family).
  2. According to Paul, (writing to Timothy) greed does the following to a person: (a) it may cause you to drift  from the faith – your relationship with Christ and (b) you pierce yourself with mental pains (Amplified Version).
  3. According to Jesus, the deceitfulness of riches (wealth) will: (a) choke (meaning to strangle completely)  the word and (b) your life will not produce the fruit of the spirit.

  • The seed that is sown into our hearts and minds is the Word of God (Mark 4:14).
  • This word has the ability to produce the very nature, attributes and character of Christ in our lives (1Pet 1:22-23).
  • This Word is powerful and energetic (Heb 4:12).
  • God’s word creates (Gen 1:3-26) and it is full of life and Spirit (John 6:63).

The powerful work of God’s Word can and will be nullified in our lives through greed and the deceitfulness of riches.

It becomes the thorns and thistles that will strangle the very life of the Word and  Spirit in you. (Matt 13:7,22).

May we rather seek the Kingdom and His righteousness!
