Proverbs 10:22 (KJV)

The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.

(AMP)  The blessing of the Lord–it makes [truly] rich, and He adds no sorrow with it [neither does toiling increase it].

  • Nearly 400 times the words bless, blessed and blessing are to be found in the whole Bible – and of that, just over a 100 times in the NT.
  • God gave his first words of blessing to the creatures of land and sea as well as the birds of the air in Genesis 1:22 and then to man in Genesis 1:28.
  • The last blessing is found in Revelation 22:14, where those who obey Him will eat of the Tree of Life.
  • In the OT God blessed Noah, Abram, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph and others.
  • Under the OT Law, all those who obeyed were recipients of God’s blessing and those who disobeyed got the consequences – the curses of the Law. (See Deuteronomy 28)

  • Living in the NT, free from the law and its curses (Romans 8:2, Galatians 3:13), the whole concept of blessing has changed.
  • Christ is called the Son of the Blessed. (Mark 14:61-62)
  • He is blessed forevermore. (2Corinthians 11:31)
  • He received the blessing and glory from the Father. (Revelation 5:12-13)
  • And every blessing we want and need is to be found in Christ! (Ephesians 1:3)
  • Blessing is therefore not something which can be earned in any way or like a rabbit’s foot to bringing you luck and wealth.
  • Blessedness is not static but progressive and is an inner state of being.
  • This state of blessedness begins the moment a person believes in Jesus Christ for salvation.
  • As the life of Christ in us increases, so the state of blessedness.

May we not seek the blessing, but the Blessed One in whom all the blessings anyway are.

May His power and riches and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and blessings become progressively more in our lives, as we press toward the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:8-14)

Christ is the blessing from God, which will enrich us in every way, and no human toiling will increase it.
