Wisdom of Solomon #9

Proverbs 9:5 (KJV)

Come, eat of my (Wisdom’s) bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.

  • There are 8 Hebrew words translated wine in the OT.
  • The word used in this verse comes from the root word meaning to ferment and is used of every sort of wine in the OT.
  • A careful observation of these words (a total of 198 times) will lead us their use and all that there is to know on the subject.
  • It is interesting to note the following verses.

Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High. (Genesis 14:18)

Wine that gladdens the heart of man, oil to make his face shine, and bread that sustains his heart. (Psalm104:15)

They eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence. (Proverbs 4:17)

It is senseless to debate over the use of wine in the NT, as the Bible is very clear on the subject.

(Romans 14:20-23, Ephesians 5:18, 1Timothy 3:1-8, 5:23, Titus 1:7, 2:3,)

What is of more importance though, is the symbolism behind  the bread and the wine of the OT.

It points towards our spiritual food and drink.

  • Jesus said that a man will not only live on bread but also from every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:4)
  • Furthermore, He is calling himself the living bread of heaven from which every man should partake. (John 6:48-51)
  • He also compares the Spirit with new wine. (Matthew 9:17, Mark 2:22, Luke 5:37-38)
  • And on the day of Pentecost, the people thought those who were filled with the Spirit, had too much wine. (Acts 2:13-18)
  • The Apostle Paul commands us not be drunk with wine but be constantly filled with His Spirit. (Ephesians 5:18)

This is the true bread which will sustain our hearts and the best wine that will gladdens our hearts!

  • When last did you take time to listen to the words of life from Christ Jesus?
  • When last were you filled with the Spirit of gladness?
  • Or… are we spiritually malnourished because of our busy schedules?

May we all take time everyday to feed our hearts and spirits with the heavenly food and drink!
