Proverbs 3:3-4 (KJV)

Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.

Luke 2:52 (KJV)  And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

Acts 2:46-47 (NIV)  Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Acts 7:10 (KJV)  And delivered him (Joseph) out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh King of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

  • The Greek word for favour is charis and is more frequently translated as grace.
  • E.g. Grace (charis) be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. (Phil 1:2)

The Greek dictionary explains:

  • Grace, particularly that which causes joy, pleasure, gratification, favour, acceptance, for a kindness granted or desired, a benefit, thanks, gratitude.
  • The absolutely free expression of the loving kindness of God to men finding its only motive in the bounty and benevolence of the Giver.
  • Unearned and unmerited favour.
  • Grace stands in direct contrast to works.

  • Man tries with all his works and schemes to find favour, in order to benefit himself.
  • But when God bestows grace upon man, it is to promote and advance His plans and purposes.
  • This is evident in the lives of Moses, David, Solomon, Daniel, Jesus, Paul and the early Church.
  • In doing God’s work, His favour (grace) is needed – not man’s effort.

May we come to the place where we recognise His grace is the catalyst in all we do, especially when it is not doing our will, but carrying out His will.
