Proverbs 6:16 (NLT)

There are six things the Lord hates— no, seven things he detests:

(This article is not about the seven things God hates but rather on the occurrence, significance, and truths behind the numbers 6 and 7.)

In the Greek alphabet, the letter 6 is called stigma (σ), which also means a mark, especially a mark made by a brand as burnt upon slaves, cattle, or soldiers by their owners or masters.

  • 6 is the number of man.  Man was created on the 6th day.  (Gen 1:24-31)
  • 6 is also the number for labour.  “Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work”. (Ex 20:9)
  • 6 is the number for the enemy.  The serpent (beast) was also created on the 6th day.  (Gen 1:24; 3:1)

Man is made spirit, soul, and body.  (1Thee 5:23).

For every part of man, there is an enemy (Rev 16:13; 20:10):

The beast (beastly nature – Ecc 3:18),

The false prophet (lies of the mind/soul – 2Cor 11:3),

And the dragon (the frailty as well as the passionsof the human body – Num 21:6-9; Rom 7:23-24).

In the Hebrew, the word seven comes from the root word, which means to be full, satisfied and to have enough.  This can clearly be seen in all the Scripture verse relating to the number 7.

  • 7 is the number for fullness, completion, and perfection.  On the 7th day, God completed His creation.  (Gen 2:2)
  • 7 is the number for rest.  “…and he (God) rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made”. (Gen 2:2; 8:4; Ex 16:30; 20:11; Heb 4:4)
  • 7 is the number for blessing.  “And God blessed the seventh day…” (Gen 2:3; Deut 16:15)
  • 7 things, which spiritually defile.  “For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander.  These are what defile you.” (Matt 15:19-20)
  • The 7 washings in 2Kings 5:14 are typical of our complete spiritual cleansing.

May we cease from our own efforts, labour, and toil, and move into God’s rest where the blessings overflow.

May the divine earthquakes of God deal with every enemy in our lives.

May we be cleansed from all defilement and grow up to be the sons of God. (Rom 8:19; Heb 2:10)
