Proverbs 2:1-6 (NKJV)

My son, if you receive my words, And treasure my commands within you, So that you incline your ear to wisdom, And apply your heart to understanding; Yes, if you cry out for discernment, And lift up your voice for understanding, If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding;

The three words Solomon is using over and over in the book of Proverbs are knowledge, understanding and wisdom.

According to Webster’s Dictionary

Knowledge is: Information acquired through learning,

Understanding is: Intellectual apprehension, comprehension, the sum of the mental powers by which knowledge is acquired, retained and extended,

Wisdom is: The power of true and right discernment and then conformity to the course of action dictated by such discernment, good practical judgment.

The Apostle Paul gives us a New Testament perspective on knowledge, understanding and wisdom.

Ephesians 1:17-18 (NLT)  …asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God. I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance.

Colossians 1:9-10 (NLT) So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.

There are two kinds of knowledge, understanding and wisdom.

  • The one is human wisdom and the other is Godly, Spiritual wisdom.
  • The one is earthly and the other heavenly.
  • The one appeals to the natural man and the other to the spiritual person.
  • The one you acquire, or should I say, eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 3:6) and the other from the tree of Life.
  • The one you find in this world and the other one you will only find in Christ.

May we all eat less of the first one and seek with all our hearts and mind the knowledge, understanding and wisdom, which are found in Christ.

Colossians 2:2-3 (NIV)

My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
