Balaam's donkey

Proverbs 4:2 (AMP)

For I give you good doctrine [what is to be received]; do not forsake my teaching.

The word doctrine in the Hebrew occurs nine times in the OT.  (Deut 32:2; Job 11:4; Prov 1:5; 4:2; 7:21; 9:9; 16:21, 23; Is 29:24)

It has the meaning of something received or learned, instruction, knowledge, doctrine, learning, or fair speech.

It also signifies persuasion in a good or evil sense.

The NT speaks of quite a few different doctrines:

The doctrine of men.  (Matt 15:9; Mark 7:7; Col 2:22)

The doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.  (Matt 16:12)

The doctrine of devils.  (1 Tim 4:1)

The doctrine of Balaam and of the Nicolaitanes.  (Rev 2:14-15)

The Scriptures also speak of,

every wind of doctrine (Eph 4:4),

sound doctrine (1 Tim 1:10; 4:6; Tit 1:9),

strange doctrine (Heb 13:9),

the Apostle’s doctrine (Acts 2:42),

and lastly, the doctrine of Christ – also called Jesus’ or the Lord’s doctrine (2 John 1:9-10; Heb 6:2; Acts 13:12; John 18:19).

  • It is a pity that many children of God would debate and even enter into strife and contention over the doctrine and commandments of men but do not know and understand the doctrine of Christ.
  • Or the very people preaching and condemning others are following the doctrine of Balaam and the Nicolaitanes without knowing it.
  • There are those who take pleasure in studying the different religions of this world, but they themselves cannot discern when their own brothers or sister are following after the doctrines of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

According to the Apostle Paul, it is only those who are mature in Christ (having the experiential knowledge of Christ, and have grown up to the measure and stature of the fullness of Christ) who will know the different winds of doctrines and will not be swayed by it.  They will not be influenced when people try to trick them with lies so clever they sound like the truth. (Eph 4:13-14)

Of all of the doctrines mentioned in the NT, the doctrine of Christ is the only teaching, which is plainly and explicitly penned in Heb 6:1-2.

The NIV calls it the elementary teachings.  In other words, Primary School lessons.

Every child of God should know these precepts!

  1. Repentance of dead works. (What is dead works?)
  2. Faith toward God. (What is the difference between faith and hope?  Why does the Bible speak of the end of your faith?)
  3. Baptisms. (There are 5 baptisms mentioned in the NT. What are they?)
  4. Laying on of hands. (Why do we lay hands on people and what happens spiritually when we do that?)
  5. Resurrection of the dead. (Why does the Bible distinguish between resurrection of the dead and the resurrection from the dead? What is the resurrection from among Paul spoke of in Phil 3:11?)
  6. Eternal judgment. (What is past, present and future judgment and the difference between a believers and unbelievers judgment?)

Unless we know, understand, and comprehend these principles of Christ, we cannot advance to the Secondary School of the Spirit.

Or as the Message Translation so aptly put it, “let’s leave the preschool fingerpainting exercises on Christ and get on with the grand work of art.  Grow up in Christ.  The basic foundational truths are (should be) in place” Parenthesis added.

May we be diligent to present ourselves approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, correctly teaching the word of truth.

May we grow up in Christ, able to discern the lies that sound like the truth.

May we come to the experiential knowledge of Christ within us, manifesting the fullness of Christ.
