Proverbs 31:1 (KJV)

The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.

Thank God for mothers!

I do not know what would have happen to most of us if it weren’t for our mothers.

It is God’s plan for all of us to grow through the three stages of spiritual growth.

Depending which passage of Scripture you read (in the NT), you will find different terminology used for these three phases.

  • Children, young men, and fathers according to 1 John 2:12-14.
    • Of Jesus, it was said, “…unto us a child is born…a son is given…the everlasting Father…”  (Is 9:6)
  • Faith, hope, and love say the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 13:13.
  • Peter, James, and John represent the 3 abovementioned stages very clearly.
  • Prophet, (high) priest and king as displayed in the life and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
    • Prophet when He the Spirit came upon Him like a dove (Luke 3:22)
    • He was clothed with glory and honour – the clothing for a high priest (Ex 28:2) – on the Mt. of transfiguration.  (Matt 17:1-2; 2 Pet 16-18)
    • He conquered death and became our eternal King.  (1 Tim 1:17)

The 3 important events in any Jewish boy’s life was/is,

It does not matter if a boy is a prince and the successor to the throne; he still needs schooling and is under the supervision of the mother (or tutors) until the ceremony of Bar Mitzvah.  (Gal 4:1-2; 1 Cor 2:13)

We have the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and of the 3, the Holy Spirit has the mother-like characteristics.

  • A mother will comfort you.  The Holy Spirit is called the Comforter.  (John 14:16, 26; 15:26; 16:7)
  • A mother will remind you of things said.  So will the Holy Spirit.  (John 14:26)
  • A mother will surely verify the truth spoken.  The Holy Spirit is called the Spirit of Truth.  (John 14:17; 15:26; 16:13)
  • Mothers convey the messages from the father of the house.  The Spirit speaks of the things heard.  (John 16:13-15)
  • A mother shows us our wrongs in order to keep us on the straight and narrow road.  The Holy Spirit convicts us of sins.  (John 16:8)
  • The mother points with her finger in reprimand or to enforce her power/authority.  The Spirit is called the finger of God.  (Ex 8:19; Luke 11:20; Matt 12:28)
  • A mother washes her children and likewise the Holy Spirit cleanses us.  (Titus 3:5)

Our first “stage of spiritual growth” is the child, faith, Peter, prophetic and spiritual circumcision phase and it is the work of the Holy Spirit helping, guiding, convicting, and enforcing it.

We cannot walk in the truth, hear the voice of the Lord, discern between good and evil, unless we are baptised (washed) with the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit trains and equips us for the next growth-phase – becoming the Bride of Christ.

May we submit ourselves to the Spirit of God

May we allow the Holy Spirit to wash, cleanse, convict, guide, comfort, and show us the truth.

May we grow until we are filled with all the fullness of God.
