Wisdom of Solomon #29

Proverbs 29:3 (NKJV)

Whoever loves wisdom makes his father rejoice, but a companion of harlots wastes his wealth.

The Amplified Bible puts it like this, Whoever loves skillful and godly Wisdom rejoices his father, but he who associates with harlots wastes his substance”.

We find a NT story, which compares with this verse – the account of the Prodigal son.

And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous (reckless and loose) living. (Luke 15:13)

  • This son’s decision to take his part of the inheritance was surely not a joy to his father.
  • The son did exactly the opposite of wisdom – wasting his livelihood in the world, ending up as a citizen of that country, being fed with pig’s food.

Sometimes we as Christians do the same.

  • We take the first payment of our inheritance – which is the Holy Spirit – and think we can go live in the world, as the world and it will not affect us.  (2Cor 1:22; 5:5; Eph 1:14)
  • How foolish we can be!
  • It will not be long before we are back as a citizen of the world – living in the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – finding ourselves between the unclean pigs, far from the Father’s Presence. (1John 2:15-17)

  • Jesus said we are in this world but not of this world and Paul emphasized our heavenly citizenship to the Christians in the city of Philippi.  (John 17:14-18; Phil 3:20)
  • The Amplified Bible correctly writes wisdom with a capital W in. (Proverbs 29:3)

  • Jesus Christ has become the wisdom of God.  (1Cor 1:24)
  • He has also become our Wisdom.  (1Cor 1:30)
  • Now, we are able to have a spirit of wisdom and revelation because His Spirit is the 1st down payment of our heavenly inheritance (Eph 1:17-19; 2Cor 1:22; 5:5; Eph 1:14)

May He protect us from foolish decisions and reckless/loose living.

May we cherish and protect our Godly inheritance.

May we love Wisdom and may our Father rejoice over us.
