Wisdom of Solomon #25

Proverbs 25:1 (KJV)

These are also proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.

We should be grateful to these men of King Hezekiah.  Through their effort a large portion of the OT was preserved.

Evidently they were a special guild of scribes employed in the art of editing and putting together the OT books.

There was an OT law concerning a king, which read as follows,

“When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the priests, who are Levites.  It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the LORD his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees”.  (Deut 17:18-19)

I can still remember when I was at school, how the teacher as a form of punishment, made me write certain sentences a hundred times on the black board – “I will not talk in the class” or some other sentence which was fitting of my misdemeanor.  The teacher’s aim was to instill or even imprint good behaviour into my mind and heart.

  • The writing and meditating on the Law of Moses were the standard for God’s righteousness under the dispensation of the Law.  It promises success and blessings in every area of life, should it be obeyed.  (Deut 28: 1-14; Josh 1:8)
  • However, the Age of the Law has past and we are under grace.  (John 1:17; Rom 6:14; Gal 2:21; 5:4)
  • The Prophet Jeremiah prophesied of a time when God will actually come and put His laws within man – not outward laws but inward laws (Jer 31:33-34; Heb 8:10; 10:16)

  • That time came to pass with the outpouring of God’s Spirit on all flesh at the day of Pentecost.  (Acts 2:14, 14-18)
  • After Peter and the others received the outpouring of God’s Spirit and power, he preached and 3000 were saved.  (Acts 2:41)
  • By being baptised with the Holy Spirit and hearing the voice of the Spirit, meditating upon His word and becoming doers of the spoken word the laws of the kingdom of heaven are engraved on our hearts and minds.  (Jam 2:21-22)

May we heed to the voice of God’s Spirit,

May we become doers of the word,

and

May we become the epistle of the Lord, known and read by all men.  (2Cor 3:2)
