Proverbs 21:3 (AMP)

To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.

  • Since the time of Cain and Abel, God has instituted the offering of sacrifices.  (Genesis 4:3-6)
  • Under the Law of Moses, there were several different types of sacrifices.  The Burnt offering, Meat offering, Peace offering, Sin offering and Trespass offering.  (Leviticus 1-4)
  • However, you could bring your offering to the priests (and God), fulfilling God’s requirements, but with a heart far from God.
  • The reason Prophet Samuel told Saul, “What is more pleasing to the Lord: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice?  Listen!  Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams”. (1 Samuel 15:22)
  • The Pharisees of Jesus’ times were also of those who adhered to the law with all its sacrifices and offerings.
  • However, Jesus was not impressed with their outward works, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!  You pay a tenth of mint, dill, and cumin, yet you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy, and faith.  These things should have been done without neglecting the others”. (Matthew 23:23)
  • The reason for His stern rebuke comes from knowing their hearts.  (Matthew 9:4)
  • They focused on the outward observances, but their hearts were far from God.
  • They liked to be seen, to be heard, the chief seats in the synagogues and upper rooms at the feasts and telling everyone what to do. However, they themselves did not do any of it.  (Matthew 23:1-7)

In searching our own hearts, we should ask ourselves these same questions:

Why are we doing what we do?

Why are we attending Church, reading our Bibles, giving our money, or helping others?

Is it to be seen by men?

To impress God?

To pacify our consciences?

For the fear of some curse from God?

No matter how big and impressive our works may be, without our hearts in total surrender to God, it does not mean anything.

People may praise you, but God look at the heart of man.  (Psalm 44:21; Jeremiah 17:10; Revelation 2:23)

May we remember, “obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams.

May we serve God with all our hearts,

And may our sacrifices and offerings come from a pure heart!
