Proverbs 20:27 (KJV)

The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

  • The belly is the part of man that receives the food and is part of the digestive process.
  • From the stomach, it moves to the small intestine, the large intestine, the rectum and then out.
  • Digestion is the process by which food and drink are broken down into their smallest parts so the body can use them to build and nourish cells and to provide energy.
  • In the OT, there were clean and unclean food.  (Leviticus 11)
  • The people of God in the OT were forbidden to eat unclean food or even touch it.

In the NT Jesus, explained the truth and spirit behind these laws to the people of His day.

Mark 7:18-23 (NIV)

“Are you so dull?” he asked.  “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him ‘unclean’?  For it doesn’t go into his heart but into his stomach, and then out of his body.”  (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods “clean”.)  He went on: “What comes out of a man is what makes him ‘unclean.’  For from within, out of men’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance, and folly.  All these evils come from inside and make a man ‘unclean.’  “

  • Although it is certainly good and beneficial to have a nutritional diet, what is of more importance is the cleanness of one’s heart.
  • Once we become children of God, the Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God.  (Romans 8:16)
  •  Our “dead” spirit – disconnected from His Spirit (the source of Life) – has received life and now becomes the agent through which His Spirit is working, talking, and guiding.
  • We have passed from death to life.  (John 5:24)
  • Then my spirit becomes the light/lamp of the Lord, searching and exposing the condition of my heart.
  • If we allow Him, the same Spirit then purges and cleanses us from this unclean heart condition.  (Matthew 3:11-12, Romans 8:13, Titus 3:5)

May we come to that place where we are more concerned about the condition of our hearts than the condition of our bodies.  (1Timothy 4:8)

May we yield ourselves to God, as those who are alive from the dead.  (Romans 6:13)

May the words we speak be words of life and healing – coming from a clean and pure heart. (Matthew 12:34, Proverbs 16:24)
