Proverbs 15:10 (NKJV)

Stern discipline awaits him who leaves the way; he who hates correction will die.

  • The word discipline also has the meaning of instruction.
  • In Proverbs, instruction and discipline come primarily through the father (or father figure such as a teacher).
  • This is usually conveyed orally but may come via the rod. (Proverbs 1:8, 13:1, 24)

Discipline is also found in the NT

Hebrews 12:5-7 (NIV) And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.” Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?

  • Jesus said: “I am the way, the truth and the life…” (John 14:6)
  • By His Spirit we are progressively following the Way, understanding the Truth and living the Life.
  • As a new born child learning to take the first steps and then gradually growing through childhood, teenager to an adult, so we are growing unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. (Ephesians 4:13)
  • The younger the child, the more the grace and lighter the discipline.
  • With maturity come responsibility and more severe discipline.
  • This discipline comes through the Father – orally (reproof, correction, Scripture, instruction) and via the rod (hardships).
  • It is to be embraced – as the Father’s will for us is to be conformed to the image of his Son. (Romans 8:29)

May we keep on following the Way!

And if we have left the Way, may we heed to the Spirit’s conviction, the Word’s instruction and the Father’s discipline.

As you pursue the Way may you grow in the Truth and come to the place where you live the Life of the Kingdom.
