Wisdom of Solomon #14

Proverbs 14:4 (NIV)

Where there are no oxen, the manger is empty, but from the strength of an ox comes an abundant harvest.

Revelation 4:6-7 (NIV) In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle.

  • Both Ezekiel and the Apostle John saw the living creatures with four different faces; a lion, an ox, a man and the face of an eagle.
  • Though I have no doubt in what they saw, I believe every face depicts a certain character trait of Christ:
  • The lion from the tribe of Judah – a King
  • The ox – a Servant
  • The face of a man – the Son of man
  • The eagle – the Son of God

  • These character traits are also shown respectively in the four Gospels.
  • Matthew – the King
  • Mark – the Servant
  • Luke – Son of man
  • John – Son of God

  • Interesting to note some distinguishing features from each Gospel writer.
  • Matthew make sure the genealogy of the King is written down.
  • Mark has no genealogy of Jesus, for knowledge of a servant’s background is not important.
  • Luke shows the humanity of Jesus and the need to pray – 7 times in this Gospel.
  • John portrays the Son of God, walking on earth with his head in heaven. (John 3:13 KJV)

  •  The emphasis in Mark is on serving and not teaching (as in Matthew).
  • Jesus is not called Lord in the Gospel of Mark, until after the resurrection.
  • There is also the repetition of the words forthwith, straightway and immediately in the book of Mark – the traits of an obedient, faithful servant.

Then, as to the way he served, there are many details;

  • He took them in His arms, and blessed them (Mark 10:16),
  • He took him in His arms (Mark 9:36,)
  • He took her by the hand and lifted her up (Mark 1:31),
  • He took the blind man by the hand (Mark 8:23),
  • Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up (Mark 9:27)

God, by His Spirit, wants to mould us to this pattern of His Son – a servant in service of the King

May, we yield to the inner workings of Him, who wants to bring many sons to glory! (Hebrews 2:10)

…He also did predestinate (us) to be conformed to the image of his Son

(Romans 8:29)

May we, by the Spirit, be formed to serve, as Christ served, for an abundant harvest of souls!
