Proverbs 7:25-27 (KJV)

Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths. For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her. Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.

(YLT) Let not thy heart turn unto her ways, Do not wander in her paths, For many [are] the wounded she caused to fall, And mighty [are] all her slain ones. The ways of Sheol — her house, Going down unto inner chambers of death!

  • The word Sheol occurs 65 times in the OT.
  • In the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible it is translated 26 times as grave, twice as pit and 27 times as hell.
  • The Hebrew meaning is the world of the dead.  The Greek equivalent is the word Hades
  • It is only by studying each passage that the Bible student will gain understanding of the word (and the place).

It is easy to think the Bible is about heaven and hell.  In fact, listening to some people you might think it’s the central message of the Bible.

  • But the truth is, the Bible’s message is about life and death.
  • God did not tell Adam, he would go to hell if he disobeyed.
  • No, he would surely die[1].
  • God also told Moses to tell the Israelites to choose between life and death[2] (not heaven and hell).
  • Jesus came to bring life and life in abundance[3].
  • Those who believe in Him have passed from death unto life[4].
  • We were dead – already members of Sheol – but He brought life.
  • Death is first a spiritual condition and then a physical occurrence.

Ephesians 2:1-6 (NIV) As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,

Although life-and-death is an either or subject, it is also a continuum.  Every person on this Earth, finds himself on this continuum of life-and-death.

(Later more about this)

Life is not found in rules or laws, neither in rituals.

Life is not found in external things, but in a relationship with the person who is Life.

For Jesus Christ said, “I am the way, the truth and the life[5], and the words I speak are spirit and life[6].

I hope you have found this Life!
